In 2259 Una Chin-Riley, first officer of the Enterprise, was arrested by Starfleet for concealing that she was an Illyrian, whose genetic modifications Federation law prohibited.
Una had hidden her heritage for years so that she could serve in Starfleet. During a crisis caused by an illness aboard the Enterprise, she was forced to reveal her nature to Dr. M'Benga, and the secret soon began to come out.
At the end of the year Captain Marie Batel arrived to take her into custody. Una's case led to a trial that tested how the Federation treated people who had altered their own genetics.
