B'Elanna journeys to the Klingon underworld.
After a shuttle accident, Torres lies near death and finds herself on a ship that carries dishonored Klingons to the underworld, where she meets the spirit of her mother. She has to find a way to free her mother from the fate that she believes awaits her.
The episode is an exploration of Klingon mythology and a story about Torres's relationship with her heritage and her mother. It is a dreamlike story that is rooted in her unresolved feelings, and it has a very different visual style from most of the series.
