The figure from Klingon myth who pilots the Barge of the Dead, carrying dishonoured souls to Gre'thor, seen by B'Elanna Torres in a near-death vision.
Kortar is the ferryman of the Barge of the Dead in Klingon belief. According to legend he was the first Klingon, who killed the gods that made him and was condemned to carry the souls of the dishonoured to Gre'thor. In Barge of the Dead, B'Elanna Torres finds herself aboard his barge after a shuttle accident leaves her near death.
On the barge Torres also finds her mother, Miral, condemned in her place. She persuades the Doctor to return her to the near-death state, faces the trials of the journey, and earns her mother's release.
