A young aspiring writer who visits the elderly Jake Sisko to ask why he gave up writing after a promising career.
Melanie is a young admirer of Jake Sisko's fiction who, in The Visitor, seeks out the elderly author at his home. She wants to know why a writer of such early promise stopped writing after publishing only a small body of work.
Jake answers by telling her the story of his father's accident during a wormhole inversion and his decades-long effort to bring Benjamin Sisko back, and that story forms the flashbacks that make up most of the episode. Melanie was played by Rachel Robinson.
