Kahlest had cared for Worf as a child and was with his family on Khitomer when the Romulans attacked. She survived the massacre, though she was injured, and lived quietly on Qo'noS for many years afterwards.
In Sins of the Father, Picard sought her out because she knew that Worf's father Mogh had been loyal to the Empire. Her presence forced K'mpec and Duras to reveal that Duras's own father had betrayed Khitomer, and that the Council had chosen to blame Mogh to avoid civil war.
