Trill musician and murderer whose time as a host of the Dax symbiont was concealed and suppressed in Jadzia's memories.
Joran Belar is a Trill musician who was briefly joined to the Dax symbiont between the hosts Torias and Curzon. He had been rejected as a candidate for joining because of his violent temper, yet he was joined anyway, and during his time as host he committed murder, including killing the doctor who had evaluated him.
In Equilibrium, Jadzia Dax suffers hallucinations of a masked figure and a haunting melody. Benjamin Sisko and Julian Bashir trace the tune to Joran and discover that the Trill authorities altered their records and suppressed Dax's memories of him to hide the fact that an unsuitable candidate had been successfully joined. Jadzia finally accepts Joran's memories as part of herself.
Joran remains a dark presence in the Dax line. In Facets, his personality is temporarily placed in Sisko's body during Jadzia's Zhian'tara ritual, and in Field of Fire, Ezri Dax calls on his memories to understand and track down a killer stalking the station.
