Hatil Garan was a Vhnori man scheduled to die who chose life instead after meeting Harry Kim in Emanations.
Hatil Garan was a Vhnori who had been left dependent on his family after an accident. Believing they were doing right, his family arranged for him to undergo the transference ritual that sends the dying to the Next Emanation, the afterlife of Vhnori belief.
In Emanations, Hatil met Harry Kim, who had arrived through one of the subspace vacuoles from the burial asteroid. Kim's presence raised doubts about what really lay beyond death, and Hatil decided he did not want to go. The two agreed to switch places, letting Kim return to Voyager through the burial pod while Hatil escaped to live out his life in a rural village.
