Gabriel Bell is remembered in the twenty-fourth century as the man behind the Bell Riots of 2024, an uprising in a San Francisco Sanctuary District in which he died protecting hostages. In Past Tense, Sisko, Bashir and Dax are accidentally sent back to the days just before the riots.
Inside the district, Bell comes to the aid of Sisko and Bashir during a fight and is killed, and history changes so severely that the Federation vanishes. Sisko assumes Bell's identity and leads the uprising in his place. After the uprising in Past Tense, Part II, the historical record carries Sisko's image as Gabriel Bell.
