Freya was a shieldmaiden in Harry Kim's Beowulf holodeck program who befriended and courted the Doctor during his first away mission.
Freya was a character in Harry Kim's holodeck recreation of the Beowulf saga, set in the hall of the Danish king. A warrior of strength and warmth, she welcomed the stranger to the hall.
In Heroes and Demons, the Doctor entered the program to find crew members who had vanished there, taking the name Schweitzer. Freya took him under her wing and made her interest in him plain, and he gradually let down his guard. She was killed by Unferth during the ordeal and died in the Doctor's arms, a loss that stayed with him and marked his early growth as a person.
