A Tamarian captain who sacrificed himself to teach Jean-Luc Picard his people's way of speaking in metaphors drawn from their legends.
Dathon commanded a Tamarian ship in Darmok. His people spoke entirely through references to their own history and myths, which the universal translator could not make sense of. To overcome this, Dathon transported himself and Picard to the surface of El-Adrel IV, where they would have to face a dangerous creature together, echoing a legend of two strangers who became friends.
Picard gradually came to understand the story Dathon was trying to share. Dathon was badly wounded by the creature and died, and Picard used his new understanding to speak to the Tamarian crew and end a confrontation between the two ships.
