El-Adrel IV is an uninhabited planet in the El-Adrel system, home to a dangerous creature that hunts on its surface. The Tamarians chose it for a meeting with the Enterprise because of the risks it would force visitors to face together.
In Darmok, Dathon beams himself and Picard to the surface, blocking all transport, so that the two captains can learn to communicate by facing the beast together. Picard slowly grasps the Tamarian language of metaphor, but Dathon is mortally wounded before the Enterprise can bring Picard back.
