Barash is a child of an unnamed species whose mother left him alone in an underground refuge on Alpha Onias III to keep him safe from enemies. His only company was the sophisticated technology she left behind, which could read minds and generate convincing illusions.
In Future Imperfect, Barash captures Riker and convinces him that sixteen years have passed, casting himself as Riker's son, Jean-Luc. When Riker sees through the deception, Barash builds a second illusion in which he poses as a fellow prisoner of the Romulans. Once the truth comes out, Riker sympathizes with the lonely boy and invites him to come aboard the Enterprise.
