An empathic humanoid people who lived in harmony with their world's plants and animals, until their planet was destroyed in the thirty-second century.
The Kwejian are humanoids native to the planet Kwejian, whose people revered a vast tree called the World Root and crafted heirlooms from its sap. They are empathic and can connect with plants and animals, an ability marked by a glowing pattern on the forehead when used. After the Burn, they lived in a walled enclave called the Sanctuary.
The Burn shifted the orbit of the planet's moon and its tides, bringing swarms of sea locusts that devoured their harvests. To survive, the Kwejian made a deal with the Emerald Chain, trading trance worms for a repellent. The USS Discovery later helped free them from the Chain and drive off the locusts.
The best known Kwejian is Cleveland Booker, called Book, who became a courier and companion of Michael Burnham. In Kobayashi Maru, Kwejian was destroyed by the Dark Matter Anomaly, killing his brother Kyheem and nephew Leto. In Life, Itself, Book received a surviving cutting of the World Root.
