Earth Spacedock is a giant Starfleet station in orbit of Earth, with a huge internal bay large enough to hold several starships at once. Ships enter and leave through large doors, and the facility handles maintenance, refits and docking for the fleet.
It first appears in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, when the battered Enterprise returns home after the battle with Khan. Kirk and his officers later steal the Enterprise from Spacedock to go back to the Genesis planet. Scotty sabotaged the new USS Excelsior's transwarp system beforehand, so the Excelsior's attempt to chase them stalled at the start.
In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the alien probe searching for humpback whales drained power from Spacedock along with ships and systems across Earth. Stations of the same design appear elsewhere in later series, and the facility remains a familiar symbol of Starfleet's presence above Earth.
