Rigel XII is a harsh, storm-battered planet with valuable lithium deposits worked by a small team of miners led by Ben Childress. Its fierce magnetic storms and isolation leave the men lonely and starved for companionship.
In Mudd's Women the Enterprise burns out its lithium crystals while pursuing Harry Mudd's ship and must come to Rigel XII for replacements. The miners agree to trade only if they can take Mudd's women as wives, and Kirk is forced to bargain while one of the women flees into a sandstorm with Childress in pursuit.
