A Federation colony world stripped of all life by the Crystalline Entity while the Enterprise crew was on the surface.
Melona IV was a Federation colony in the early stages of settlement, with the Enterprise helping colonists prepare the land. The planet was attacked by the Crystalline Entity, a huge spaceborne being that consumes all organic life on a world.
In Silicon Avatar, Riker, Data and the colonists survive by hiding in a cave while the entity strips the surface bare. The attack brings Dr. Kila Marr aboard the Enterprise to study the creature that killed her son, setting up her confrontation with Data.
