The caves of Mak'ala are a cave system on the Trill homeworld where unjoined symbionts swim in pools of milky liquid. They are tended by the Guardians, unjoined Trill who devote their lives to caring for the symbionts.
In Equilibrium, Sisko, Bashir and Jadzia visit the caves while trying to understand the attacks on Jadzia's mind. A Guardian suggests that the problem lies in suppressed memories of an earlier host, setting them on the trail of Joran Belar, but he is later frightened into silence when they return.
