Vulcan Science Academy

Vulcan scientific institution

The foremost scientific academy on Vulcan, whose offer of admission Spock declined in favor of Starfleet, straining his relationship with his father.

The Vulcan Science Academy is Vulcan's most prestigious center of scientific learning and research. Admission is considered a great honor, and the academy is associated with the elite of Vulcan intellectual life.
Sarek expected his son Spock to attend, and Spock's choice to enter Starfleet instead caused an estrangement between father and son that lasted for years, as revealed when they met aboard the Enterprise in 2268. In the Kelvin timeline, Spock was accepted but walked out after the council described his human mother as a disadvantage he had overcome.
In Discovery, the academy was linked to Michael Burnham, the human raised by Sarek, whose ambitions to serve Vulcan clashed with prejudice against her. The academy's prestige and its insular culture make it a recurring symbol of Vulcan tradition and the barriers it placed in front of those it judged outsiders.
