In 2368 a probe from the dead world of Kataan gave Picard the experience of an entire lifetime there, all within about twenty-five minutes.
In 2368 the Enterprise-D found a probe that sent a beam into Picard's mind, and he collapsed on the bridge. In his mind, he woke as Kamin, a man living on Kataan, and lived decades there, raising a family as the planet's sun slowly grew hotter and killed its world.
At the end of his life Kamin watched a probe launch, and learned it was meant to carry the memory of his people to someone in the future. Only about twenty-five minutes had passed aboard the Enterprise. Inside the probe the crew found Kamin's flute, which Picard kept.
