The Promellians and the Menthars were two ancient spacefaring peoples locked in a long war. Their last battle took place in an asteroid field, which the Menthars seeded with aceton assimilators, devices that drained a ship's power and turned it into deadly radiation. Neither civilisation survived into the modern era.
In 2366 the Enterprise-D found the Promellian battle cruiser Cleponji adrift but intact and was caught in the same trap. La Forge, helped by a holographic recreation of engine designer Leah Brahms, found an escape, and Picard piloted the ship out using only a few precise thruster bursts.
