The fleet fires on the Protostar as the Vindicator's weapon triggers the armada to begin destroying itself.
In the first part of the first-season finale, the crew tries to escape but comes under fire from the gathered fleet. The Vindicator, the Diviner and Drednok beam aboard the Protostar. Gwyn fights the Vindicator while Drednok easily overpowers the others, and the Diviner is mortally wounded protecting his daughter, urging her with his last strength to unite their people.
The Vindicator then activates the construct, and the armada's ships begin destroying one another. With the universal translators failing, Gwyn uses her gift for languages to send a distress call, and several Federation allies answer, but even the arriving ships cannot halt the destruction. The episode pays off the season-long mystery of the weapon hidden aboard the Protostar and completes Gwyn's turn from the Diviner's heir into a defender of the Federation she was raised to oppose.
