The head of the pergium mining colony on Janus VI, who wants the creature killing his miners destroyed until he learns what it is.
Vanderberg is the chief engineer in charge of the pergium mining colony on Janus VI. In The Devil in the Dark, his miners are being killed by an unseen creature that moves through solid rock, and production has ground to a halt. He calls in the Enterprise and is eager for the monster to be hunted down.
When Spock mind-melds with the creature, a Horta, the crew learns it is a mother protecting its eggs, which the miners had been destroying. Vanderberg agrees to a partnership, with the Horta's offspring tunnelling for minerals alongside the miners. He was played by Ken Lynch.
