A scientist whose long-awaited neutron star experiment was threatened when Wesley Crusher's escaped nanites invaded the Enterprise-D.
Dr. Paul Stubbs had spent most of his career preparing an experiment to study a neutron star in the Kavis Alpha system, an event that happened only once every 196 years. In Evolution he came aboard the Enterprise-D to launch his probe, the Egg, and he struck up a friendship with Wesley Crusher, sharing his love of baseball.
The ship's systems began failing because nanites from one of Wesley's experiments had escaped and evolved into a collective intelligence. Stubbs tried to destroy them to save his project, provoking the nanites. Data negotiated a truce, and the nanites were given a new home, letting Stubbs finish his work.
