Miranda O'Brien is one of some eight thousand colonists in Children of Time who are descended from the Defiant's crew after the ship crashed on their planet two hundred years before. She is a descendant of Miles O'Brien and meets him as a living ancestor.
Meeting her forces O'Brien to face what the crash would mean for his own family: in that history he never returned to Keiko and Molly. Miranda and the others exist only if the crew chooses to repeat the crash.
