Kyle is a lieutenant aboard the USS Enterprise during Kirk's five-year mission, most often seen operating the transporter in the ship's transporter room. He also takes the helm or other bridge stations on occasion, making him one of the most frequently seen supporting crew of the original series.
In Mirror, Mirror his counterpart in the mirror universe is punished with an agoniser after a transporter malfunction, a glimpse of the brutality of the Terran Empire. Throughout the series Kyle is part of the reliable background that made the Enterprise feel like a working ship.
John Winston, who played him, returned as Commander Kyle in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, now serving aboard the USS Reliant as it searches for a lifeless world on which to test the Genesis device.
