Hannah Bates is a scientist in the genetically engineered colony on Moab IV. Working with Geordi La Forge, she helps devise a way to use a tractor beam to deflect the stellar core fragment that threatens the planet.
In The Masterpiece Society, the plan works only with technology borrowed from La Forge's VISOR, the device of a man who would never have been allowed to exist in her society. Seeing the value of a wider world, Hannah decides to leave Moab IV with the Enterprise, and others follow her.
