Napeans are humanoids who possess a degree of empathic sensitivity, allowing them to feel the emotions of those around them. The species is known mainly through Lieutenant Daniel Kwan, a Starfleet officer of mixed human and Napean ancestry, whose empathic senses were described as stronger than most members of his family.
In the episode Eye of the Beholder, Kwan took his own life aboard the Enterprise-D. Deanna Troi's investigation revealed that he had picked up a lingering empathic echo of a murder and suicide that had taken place during the ship's construction at Utopia Planitia years earlier, and the trauma of that imprint overwhelmed him. Troi herself came under the same influence before the mystery was solved.
