The USS Brattain was a Miranda-class starship that went missing in 2367. The Enterprise-D found it adrift in a Tyken's Rift, its crew dead after turning on one another in a wave of violence.
The only survivor, a Betazoid, was left catatonic. The Enterprise crew soon learned that a telepathic signal from an alien vessel trapped on the other side of the rift was preventing dream sleep, which had driven the Brattain's crew to madness. The Enterprise began suffering the same effects before Deanna Troi deciphered the signal in her dreams and the two ships worked together to escape.
