The hyperfield was a vast artificial structure that enclosed the home of Species 10-C, an enigmatic species living beyond the edge of the Milky Way. It was there that the USS Discovery found the makers of the dark matter anomaly that had been devastating worlds across the galaxy.
Species 10-C were unlike any species the Federation had met, and they communicated through complex patterns of light, mathematics and chemical signals rather than speech. Michael Burnham and a first contact team that included Saru, President Rillak and others crossed the hyperfield to reach them.
The anomaly turned out to be a mining tool, and Species 10-C had not known the galaxy held intelligent life that their work was harming. Once contact was made, they agreed to end the anomaly, a peaceful outcome that Burnham and Discovery had pursued despite efforts by others to destroy it by force.
