The Satarran ship was a small vessel that scanned the Enterprise-D in Conundrum, erasing the personal memories of everyone aboard and altering the ship's records. The crew woke with no idea who they were and relearned their names and roles from the computer.
The records also inserted a new first officer, Kieran MacDuff, and orders to attack the Lysians. MacDuff was really a Satarran, and his people had arranged the deception so that the Enterprise would destroy the Lysian central command. Picard grew suspicious of the Lysians' weak defences and halted the attack.
