Matt Jefferies

Art director — The Original Series

American aviation artist and art director who designed the original starship Enterprise, its bridge and many of the show's sets and props.

Walter Matthew Jefferies (1921–2003) was an American aviation artist and set designer. As art director of Star Trek he designed the exterior of the original USS Enterprise, its bridge and sickbay, the hand phaser and other props, and the Klingon D7 battlecruiser and Klingon insignia. The crawlway access tunnels aboard Starfleet ships became known as Jefferies tubes in his honor.
His unused concept sketches were later revisited for designs in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek: Enterprise. After Star Trek he worked as art director on Little House on the Prairie. He died in 2003.
