A Romulan successor state that emerged after the destruction of Romulus in 2387, seen in Star Trek: Picard.
The Romulan Free State is one of the Romulan polities that arose after the supernova of 2387 destroyed Romulus and broke apart the Romulan Star Empire. It commands a fleet of warbirds and carries on Romulan power amid the upheaval of the former imperial territories.
In Picard's first season, a large Romulan fleet sent to destroy the synthetic colony on Coppelius in 2399 acts under the direction of the Zhat Vash and Commodore Oh. The fleet withdraws after a Starfleet armada arrives and the synths shut down their beacon.
