In 2365 the Galaxy-class USS Yamato was destroyed in the Neutral Zone after an ancient Iconian probe infected its computer systems.
In 2365 the USS Yamato, a sister ship of the Enterprise-D, was searching for the homeworld of the long-vanished Iconians in the Romulan Neutral Zone. A probe launched from the planet Iconia downloaded software into the ship's computer that slowly overwrote its systems, and the Yamato exploded in front of the Enterprise.
The Enterprise and a Romulan warbird then began to suffer the same failures. Picard, Data and Worf beamed to Iconia, where Picard destroyed the Iconian gateway control center so that neither side could exploit its power. Shutting down and restoring the Enterprise's computer from archives removed the infection.
