A series of incidents in 2154 in which genetically engineered humans raised by Arik Soong seized a Klingon ship and tried to provoke war, with lasting consequences for the Klingons.
The Augment crisis of 2154 began when a group of genetically enhanced humans, grown from embryos left over from the Eugenics Wars and raised in secret by the scientist Arik Soong, took control of a Klingon Bird-of-Prey and killed its crew. The Klingons threatened Earth, and Starfleet sent the refitted Enterprise to stop them, with Jonathan Archer taking the imprisoned Soong along to help.
The story unfolds across the episodes Borderland, Cold Station 12 and The Augments. Soong rejoins his creations, and they raid Cold Station 12 to steal some 1,800 frozen Augment embryos and deadly pathogens. Their leader Malik grows increasingly violent and plans to use a biological weapon against the Klingons. Archer stops the attack, Malik is killed by Soong, and Soong resolves to turn his work toward artificial life.
The Klingons later attempted to create their own Augments, producing a virus that left many of them without forehead ridges. The crisis links the Eugenics Wars, the Soong family and the appearance of the Klingons in the original series.
