B'Elanna repairs a robot that wants to replicate.
Torres finds a damaged robot and repairs it, and the robot then asks her to help it reproduce, because its creators are gone. She soon learns that it and others of its kind belong to a long-standing conflict between two robotic factions, and she is forced to choose sides.
The episode is an exploration of artificial life and its responsibilities, and it lets Torres show her compassion and her technical skills at once. It is also an early warning about the cost of getting involved in conflicts the crew does not understand, a theme that appears throughout the series.
