An Enterprise crewman who unknowingly carries the inhibition-releasing contagion back from Psi 2000 and becomes its first victim.
Lieutenant Joe Tormolen is a member of the landing party sent to the dead research station on Psi 2000 in The Naked Time. When he removes a glove to scratch his nose, he is exposed to an unknown agent that later spreads through the Enterprise by contact.
Back aboard, Tormolen sinks into despair, questioning whether humans have any right to explore space, and turns a knife on himself in the mess hall. Sulu and Riley struggle to restrain him, and he dies in sickbay even though McCoy believes his wounds should not have been fatal; he seemed simply to lose the will to live. His death signals the danger of the contagion. He was played by Stewart Moss.
