A mute empath whose capacity for self-sacrifice is tested by the Vians to decide whether her people deserve to be saved in The Empath.
Gem is a mute woman with the empathic ability to absorb the injuries of others into her own body and heal them. In The Empath, she is held in an underground laboratory on Minara II by the Vians, who have also captured Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Kirk names her Gem.
The Vians can save only one of the planets in the threatened Minaran system, and they are testing Gem to see whether her people have learned compassion. They torture the three officers, and Gem must decide whether to sacrifice herself to heal them. When she risks her life for McCoy, the Vians are persuaded, and her people are saved. She was played by Kathryn Hays.
